Die Satzreihe - Parataxe
- einfache Hauptsätze
- verbunden durch coordinating conjunctions wie and, or, but, nor, for (denn)

Das Satzgefüge - Hypotaxe
- Hauptsatz (main clause) und ein oder mehrere Nebensätze (subordinate or dependent clause, kurz: sub-clause)
- verbunden durch subordinating conjunctions: because, since, if, although etc.
Beispiele:
He hasn't been to the park since he fell ill.
The theatre closed down last week, although most performances had been sold out.
Ein Nebensatz, der mit einer unterordnenden Konjunktion (subordinating conjunction) eingeleitet wird, kann vor oder nach dem Hauptsatz stehen. Sofern er vor dem Hauptsatz steht, wird oft ein Komma gesetzt.
While we were on holiday, we met many interesting people.
